If you don’t know who Lil Nas X is, chances are you haven’t turned on a TV, opened a phone or even walked outside.

Lil Nas X has been taking the music industry by storm. His hits “Old Town Road ” and “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” may have bopped through your car radio from time to time.

Lil Nas X has proven to be a force, rocking the entertainment industry by scandalizing the masses, thereby cleverly keeping his name in everyone’s mouth. His shock value is reminiscent of artists who have pushed the envelope before him — a strategy made famous by the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna and Michael Jackson.

However, what makes Lil Nas X’s rise to stardom extra special is his unwavering pride in himself. He is a queer person of color, and in the history of rap and R&B, queer culture was less than celebrated and more often frowned upon. Lil Nas X is taking his talent and mass appeal in a direction that creates a voice and visibility for queer individuals of color everywhere.

Lil Nas X’s debut album “Montero” is already a huge hit and buzzing on all social media platforms, proving his bite is worse than his bark. “Montero” showcases Lil Nas X’s abilities as both a skilled rapper and vocalist.

The album is a buffet of sound and musical style. Several artists lend their talent to the album such as Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, Jack Harlow and Megan Thee Stallion.

The overall sound is reminiscent of Rihanna’s early discography, 2000’s Madonna and a touch of 2000 pop-rock bands, i.e. Yellowcard and Lucky Boys Confusion. Stand-out tracks include: “Industry Baby”, “One of Me” and “Lost in a Citadel”.

In a society that needs to remind citizens that Black and LGBTQ+ lives matter, Lil Nas X couldn’t have picked a better time to ride in and champion the music industry. You can stream Montero on Spotify and purchase it on iTunes.
