There actually is such a thing as a free lunch at Harper College – well, provided that you’re a student who was willing to wait in a line that stretches across half of the quad, that is.
This year’s Hullabaloo event was held on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Organized by Student Engagement, Hullabaloo is a student fair designed to introduce new students to all of the extracurriculars Harper has to offer. Hoping to inspire some fresh faces to get involved, representatives from all on-campus clubs and activities had their tables lined up along the walkways of the quad: some inviting passers-by to participate in games, others handing out little souvenirs such as fliers, pins, t-shirts and hats.
While the last few semesters on campus have felt quiet compared to the hustle-and-bustle of the pre-pandemic era, this year’s Hullabaloo reflected the current resurgence in on-campus enrollment. Other contributing factors included the central location of the fair and the inviting smell of a free hot-dog-or-cheeseburger lunch (not to mention the prospect of smoking fools at “root beer pong” while slamming back a complimentary can of Mug at their promo tent).
Both never having experienced a Harper Hullabaloo before, sophomore Annie Rosas and freshman Ina Kmiec gave the fair a complimentary review, mentioning that it was a good opportunity to see what all the clubs had to offer.
But while stuff like that goes a long way to engross you in the campus experience, it’s the food that got all the raves.
“10/10, would stand in line again!” Kmiec said.
